<image:title>Values - Christian Tradition. Progressive Faith. All Are Welcome.</image:title>
<image:caption>Christian Tradition means that God, Jesus Christ and the Spirit are our foundation. It means we are grounded in the Bible, the sacraments of baptism and communion, and the liturgical church year. It means we sing hymns old and new, accompanied by organ or piano, in an architecturally traditional worship space. It means we are engaged in faith formation throughout our whole lives. It means we honor our Christian heritage without being bound by it. Progressive Faith means we value a variety of Biblical interpretations and recognize that Biblical texts must be engaged anew by each generation. It means we do not have tests of belief, but rather allow for many theologies. It means we trust that God is still speaking, still transforming, still working through people to create a more just and peaceful world. It means ambiguity and mystery are not our enemies. It means that we put our faith into action – socially, politically, personally, financially, collectively. It means we strive to experience God and live out God’s purposes in our daily lives. All Are Welcome means we take seriously Jesus’ example of radical inclusion of all people. It means we have an open communion table at which everyone receives the bread and cup, without exception. It means our children and youth are seen, heard and valued in the full life of the church. It means we acknowledge things that may divide us – white privilege and racism, class difference, socio-economic status, physical and mental abilities, gender identity, expression and sexual orientation, political stances – but we strive to overcome those divisions, welcoming all people as created in the image of God and beloved by God.</image:caption>

<image:title>Values - OPEN AND AFFIRMING</image:title>
<image:caption>Pictured: Pastor Victoria and State Rep. Athena Hollins on Pride Sunday, June 2022 (Our current Open and Affirming Statement was adopted by the congregation on January 29, 2023. Our original ONA Statement was adopted in 1998.) We, the congregation of St. Anthony Park United Church of Christ, declare ourselves to be an Open and Affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ. We welcome all persons into the life of this church as full partners in ministry: our worship, sacraments, work, and service. We lament the Christian Church’s long history of discrimination and its many abuses. The Church’s persecution of those who identify as LGBTQ+ often causes isolation, fear, harm, and even death. We embrace Jesus’ example to proclaim release to the captives, to set at liberty the oppressed (Luke 4:18), and to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31). Relying on God's grace, we strive to be a congregation open to all people. We hold an absolute position of non-discrimination with regard to sexuality, gender identity and expression, race, class, age, mental and physical ability, citizenship, and marital status. We honor the diversity of the human experience as a gift from God, affirming all families and relationships founded on mutual trust, dignity, and love. We pledge to work for the full inclusion of all people, believing that “nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:38-39). *Note: In this context, LGBTQ+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning, as well as intersex & inquiring, asexual, agender, aromantic, ally, plus other identities such as two-spirit, non-binary, pansexual, demisexual, and many more. We believe God is still speaking, and we anticipate our language will evolve as we grow.</image:caption>

<image:title>Values - LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT</image:title>
<image:caption>The following Land Acknowledgment Statement was adopted during a special congregational meeting on March 26, 2023: We, the congregation of St. Anthony Park United Church of Christ in present-day St. Paul, Minnesota, acknowledge that the land on which we gather and worship is the ancestral homeland of the Dakota peoples. We give thanks to Native Americans who have stewarded this land through generations, and we honor their continuing presence and contributions to the region. We acknowledge and repent of the grievous harm done to them in the names of Christianity, white supremacy, the Doctrine of Discovery, and Manifest Destiny.* We acknowledge the lasting wounds of colonialism and patriarchy and confess that we participate in institutions and systems that are corrupt and unjust. As people of faith, we commit to taking action to support and to seek justice for Indigenous communities. *The Doctrine of Discovery and Manifest Destiny are the names of national and international legal policies used to usurp land and colonize non-Christian people. The policies were based on religious and ethnocentric ideas of European and Christian superiority over other races and religions of the world.</image:caption>

<image:title>Values - Environmental Stewardship</image:title>
<image:caption>As Christians, we are called to be stewards of God's creation. We have actively worked to reduce our building's carbon footprint, installing energy efficient windows, a new boiler, improved insulation and LED lighting. We frequently include creation care and eco-justice in our Adult Forum offerings. We teach our children and youth about stewardship of the earth, and give them hands-on experiences such as caring for indoor plants and worm bins! In 2021, we moved to a 3-station model for waste: recycling, trash and composting. You can read more about our “greening” activities, click here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Values - Values: In our own words</image:title>
<image:caption>We have an annual Leadership Retreat. One of the purposes is to deepen our relationships and to reflect on being leaders of the church. At the February 2024 Retreat, newly-elected Moderator Mike Smith asked people to name one thing that they value about St. Anthony Park UCC. Here are some of their answers: We are devoted to service. It’s the healthiest church I’ve been a part of. We have a deep bench of leaders. We come from a variety of religious backgrounds and are all welcomed. It’s what a Christian Church should be. We get to bring whoever we are to this place. It’s a functional family. Gays and Jesus can be a rough road; I belong here. Our communion table is open to anyone and everyone. The variety of sermons and the different ways we worship – what’s gonna happen today? The intersection of what happens here on Sunday morning and how we live it out for the rest of the week. How the church is a reflection of Christ-like love, especially as we love and support the children here. Praying together – our embodied togetherness. The many wonderful people you can count on. It’s OK to expose my “warts” here. Living out our Christian values. And finally: "It's where everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Values - SAFE CHURCH STATEMENT</image:title>
<image:caption>St. Anthony Park United Church of Christ is committed to ensuring a safe environment for children, youth, and adults in all of the church’s programs and ministries. Doing so is one way for us to embody Jesus’ teaching to love God and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Therefore, St. Anthony Park United Church of Christ declares itself a Safe Church – a faith community where every person is regarded as beloved by God and is free from emotional, spiritual, physical or sexual exploitation, discrimination, harassment and/or abuse. To that end: St. Anthony Park United Church of Christ bans verbal, visual or physical conduct that creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment; St. Anthony Park United Church of Christ requires that all staff members, faith formation leaders, and other volunteers who are in regular contact with children and youth submit to a background check; The Pastor and the Director of Children, Youth and Family Ministries (DCYFM) of St. Anthony Park United Church of Christ are mandated reporters of neglect or abuse of children or vulnerable adults; please contact them with questions or concerns; Other adults of the congregation may also be mandated reporters as required by Minnesota law; The Safe Church Statement is distributed to every participant in New Member cohorts and to Confirmation students prior to their joining the church; St. Anthony Park United Church of Christ teaches youth about consent, boundaries, self-worth, sexual health, responsibility, and justice & inclusivity through church programs such as OWL (Our Whole Lives); St. Anthony Park United Church of Christ commits to providing continuing education and conversation around these issues, including in response to happenings in the wider culture. Action will be taken by church leadership on a case-by-case basis to address violations of the ethic of this Safe Church Statement. Endorsed by the SAPUCC Council on June 16, 2020.</image:caption>

<image:title>Kids in Worship - for parents or Caregivers</image:title>
<image:caption>➤ Model being in worship: your attendance, participation and attitude speak volumes ➤ Remind children that worship is a gift we offer to God ➤ Allow time to make bathroom visits and get settled before worship ➤ Sit toward the front. Children who can see what’s going on are more likely to be engaged ➤ Greet friends and visitors and emphasize how good it is to be together as a community ➤ Guide your child through the bulletin and hymnal ➤ Activity bags are hanging near the table at the side entrance to the sanctuary. We understand kids might get restless. It’s fine to let them read or draw, especially during the sermon ➤ Talk with your child about their joys and concerns before worship, and encourage them to pray silently or aloud during the Prayers of the Church ➤ Help them appreciate the sanctuary: the stained glass windows, flowers, paraments, candles, organ pipes and so on ➤ Encourage them to say “thank you” after the service to people who led worship that day ➤Have a conversation about the service on your way home: "What did you enjoy?" "What part was hard to understand?" "How did you feel when …?"</image:caption>

<image:title>Kids in Worship - children and holy communion</image:title>
<image:caption>At St. Anthony Park UCC, we believe that the communion table is open to all people – no exceptions, limitations or qualifications. Christ is the host and Christ welcomes everyone. On the first Sunday of every month, we celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion, and all children and youth are welcome to participate. Children can understand 3 key theological components of communion: God’s people share a meal together as God’s family We say “thank you” to God We remember Jesus Children can observe, wonder, witness, absorb and participate in the whole liturgy of communion. ➤ Communion engages all of the senses: see, hear, taste, touch and smell ➤ Children may not fully understand the sacrament, but their experience of it will grow and deepen as they mature ➤ It is important for children to witness their parent(s) and other adults in the community receiving the bread and cup ➤ Children learn to be in worship only by being in worship; it is a learned behavior ➤ Children are capable of meeting high expectations ➤ Adults ought not underestimate the spiritual capacity of children ➤ If the parent(s) or child prefer that the child not commune, they are welcome to witness the sacrament but not partake of the bread and cup.</image:caption>

<image:title>Justice and Mercy - taking action: Justice & mercy</image:title>
<image:caption>St. Anthony Park UCC encourages and equips the congregation to put their faith into action through a range of service opportunities. As Christians, we are called to care for others (whom we may or may not meet) and to shine the Christ light in places that need it most. Justice Justice is about systemic change. Acts of justice are slow, hard to measure, ambiguous, and are never 'done'. Working for racial reckoning, economic justice, affordable housing, environmental stewardship and LGBTQ rights and freedoms are some examples of long-term justice endeavors. Here are some examples of our justice-making work:</image:caption>

<image:title>Sanctuary Supporting - Sanctuary Supporting Congregation</image:title>
<image:caption>SAPUCC is a Sanctuary Supporting Congregation.* We work co-operatively with several other churches and share needs, tasks, ideas and resources. There are 3 coalitions in the metro area: East St Paul, South Minneapolis, and our coalition in the University Area. We all work under the umbrella of ISAIAH, which is a faith-based organization promoting social justice. *As defined by ISAIAH, "Sanctuary and Supporting congregations not only provide refuge and a safe haven to families fighting deportation, they also fight for full immigrant justice. This includes fighting and advocating for policies and legislation that embraces a sanctuary state; drivers licenses for all Minnesotans, regardless of status; immigrant legal defense funds, know your rights and rapid response trainings; and getting federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) out of Minnesota."</image:caption>

<image:title>Sanctuary Supporting - Sanctuary supporting Church: taking action</image:title>
<image:caption>➣ Our congregation and coalition were represented at ISAIAH and Coalition Meetings. ➣ Our congregation and coalition were represented and joined about 200 others at the State Capitol to talk to our senators about the need for drivers’ licenses for immigrants. ➣ Our congregation was represented at Sherburne County Jail to support Elk River UCC and to protest the proposed expansion of the jail to house 200 more immigrants. The effort to expand failed – thanks be to God. ➣ Our congregation and coalition were represented at ICE Head Quarters at Fort Snelling. We joined about 250 people at a vigil to protest the use of Bishop Whipple’s name on their building. ➣ After ICE activity in Dinkytown, representatives of our congregation and coalition delivered fliers to educate people of their rights. ➣ SAPUCCer David L. represented us in Arizona and across the border in Mexico . He did humanitarian work and was further educated about the situation there. He came back and told us about it at the Adult Forum on November 24, 2019, so that we can be more educated. Thank you, David. ➣ Our congregation was represented when the Minnesota Conference UCC decided to work towards making Minnesota a Sanctuary State. ➣ Our congregation is represented by two people, Leslie A. and Sue G., who write letters to detainees and have supported them by their presence in Immigration Court. We are grateful to Sue and Leslie for sharing their thoughts and experiences at one of our vigils. ➣ Our congregation has been represented at the monthly Sanctuary Vigils held in our sister churches, including hosting 2 vigils in our sanctuary. The vigils are a time to carve out a sacred space, to ground ourselves in our faith and look for guidance. ➣ This congregation has provided generous financial support to the mission of Sanctuary. Thank you to the Board Mission & Witness, The Diaconate Fund, Compassionate Christmas Fund, and donors to vigil offerings as well as many individual donations to our immigrant and sanctuary work.</image:caption>

<image:title>Children and Youth - OWL (Our whole lives)</image:title>
<image:caption>"Our Whole Lives: Sexuality Education and Sexuality and Our Faith" (OWL) is an engaging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate sexuality curriculum that incorporates UCC beliefs and priorities. SAPUCC offers it to 7th, 8th, and 9th graders every other school year. We have also offered a version of the curriculum for young adults. OWL is a unique program that is aligned with the National Sex Education Standards but goes further to help participants clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the social, emotional, and spiritual aspects of sexuality. OWL proactively guides youth to become sexually healthy people who feel good about themselves and their bodies, remain healthy, and build positive, equitable loving relationships. The broad topic areas covered with OWL Values are self-worth, relationships, sexual health, interpersonal skills, society and culture, and justice and inclusivity.</image:caption>

<image:title>Children and Youth - CONFIRMATION CLASS</image:title>
<image:caption>SAPUCC offers Confirmation for 9th and 10th graders every other school year. The cohort meets 2 to 3 times per month from September thru May, takes a break over the summer, and culminates with Confirmation Sunday in mid-October. <image:title>Children and Youth - High Schoolers</image:title>
<image:caption>High school students are invited to come together at different times throughout the school year, sharing some of their reality of life in high school as they continue to grow in body, mind and spirit. High school youth are also encouraged to attend the Adult Forum on Sunday mornings. We explore the intersection of theology and faith with current events or aspects of our culture. We also dig deeper into scripture and continue a variety of spiritual practices. We celebrate each other's milestones and accomplishments, such as driver’s licenses, prom, concerts, theater productions, and sporting events. Sometimes we gather for food and fun; sometimes we gather for a service project or justice-making experience; sometimes we gather for quiet, reflection, prayer and mindfulness. No matter what shape it takes, High School faith formation is a dynamic process!</image:caption>

<image:title>Music Ministry - A Musical congregation</image:title>
<image:caption>Building on a rich musical tradition, the Sanctuary Choir enjoys singing together and sharing a wide variety of musical offerings with the congregation. SAPUCC has a Handbell Choir that enchants, professional musicians from our own congregation who inspire, and frequent guest singers and instrumentalists from the wider community who enrich our worship. We are a musical congregation. I invite all of you in the pews (and on Zoom!) to add your voices, and to experience the deep healing and transformative power of song. ~John Habermann, Choir Director</image:caption>
